Abstract

The main lines of thought upon the origin and evolution of the Earth surface are drawn. The research has been developing, through the formulation of adapted paradigms, in the attempt to find one general theory for the morphogenesis. In spite of the high scientific and philosophical con tents of some theories, the heuristic process until today elaborated has not still allowed to reach the ambitious goal. The way already done in this direction has however concurred to accumulate an enormous amount of data and an advanced knowledge of the surface of our planer. Therefore Geomorphology has become one fundamental part of the Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences.
