Estimate of the risk induced by a possible rockslide-debris flow overhanging Platì (Southern Calabria, Italy)

This paper deals with the prediction of the possible reach of a 40 x 10 6 m3 rockslide-debris flow which could get detached from a mountain side in the Aspromonte Range (South. Calabria, Italy) and move downwards at high speed for a unknown but presumably long distance.The village of Platì lies along the possible path of the landslide, 2.9 to 3.5 Km from the top of the breakaway scar. Obviously, it would be of utmost importance to establish whether or not it is within the reach of the landslide.Four simple mathematical models available from the literature (SHEIDEGGER, 1973; HSÜ, 1975; DAVIES, 1982; LI TIANCHI, 1983) are employed in the attempt of making such a prediction. The results nearly agree in indicating that the quick-moving debris can reach the village. As far as we know it is the first time that these models are practically used. Since the geo-environmental conditions are favourable to the development of rockslidedebris flows (similar phenomena took already place in the area) it would be advisable to undertake a campaign of monitoring.
