Fracture patterns and morphogenic processes on the slope between Vietri sul Mare and the Porto of Salerno

Abstract

A meso-structural fracture analysis was made on the slope between Vietri sul Mare and the Port of Salerno. The statistical analysis allowed to recognize four fracture patterns and to determine their mean orientations. To describe the fracture-related morphogenic processes of the examined slope, a sample area was chosen for the cinematic analysis. The most likely landslide processes were found computing the maximum safe angle for each hypothetical failure mode (wedge sliding, plane sliding and toppling) coupled with the orientation of the sample area. The results of the cinematic analysis fit very well the data obtained from the scarps of two recent landslides.
