A century of glacier fluctuations in the Lombardy, Alps (Italy)

Abstract

The patterns of fluctuations of Ghiacciaio dei Forni and Ghiacciaio della Ventina in Lombardy, during the last century, are identified. Both the glaciers show strong retreats from the end of the past century to the ‘70s of our century, when the fronts of the two glaciers begin an advancing period. This was mainly a consequence of a decrease in summer temperature by about 0.5 °C. In the last years of ’80s the warm summers caused a new period of retreating for the above listed glaciers and for almost all the glaciers of the Lombard Alps.
