The paper describes the development of glaciological and snow research in Italy starting from the second half of the 19th
century. It discusses the major initiatives of the Comitato Glaciologico Italiano and Club Alpino Italiano. The Six National
Glaciological Meetings and the role of the journals «Bollettino del Comitato Glaciologico Italiano» and «Geografia Fisica
e Dinamica Quaternaria» are also mentioned. Then, the paper remembers the principal publications, over all the
«Catasto dei Ghiacciai Italiani».
