Modificazioni di livello e volumetriche per il Ghiacciaio della Mare (Alpi Centrali, Gruppo Ortles-Cevedale), 1990-2000
Elevation and volume changes in the La Mare Glacier (Central Alps, Ortles-Cevedale Group), 1990-2000

An aerial survey carried out in October 2000 on the La Mare Glacier allowed comparison with a previous survey of 1990 and determination of the elevation and volume variations during this ten-year period. The final product is a computerized 1:5000 thematic map with isolines representing elevation variations. These variations are negative at almost all altitudes between 2540 and 3650 m a.s.l. with a mean value of -6.33 m, corresponding to a volume of -26.2789 x 10⁶ m³. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) in 2000 was calculated at 3600 m a.s.l., causing a situation of severe disequilibrium for the entire glacial system. The results for the La Mare Glacier are compared with parallel data for the neighbouring Careser Glacier, pointing out the essential importance of the topographic and morphometric peculiarities in the accelerated glacier shrinkage phase that affected the southern slope of Central Alps during the 1990s.
