The recent riduction of the Lombardy glaciers: results of the most recent mass balance
Keywords:
Glacier regression, Glacier mass balance, Lombardy Alps, ItalyAbstract
Since 1987 a mass balance monitoring network, which is now based on eight units, was created on the Lombardy glaciers. All the results of both balance years 1996/97 and 1997/98 are negative. The mean net specific balance in mm w.e. for the group of five glaciers (that it is possible to compare) increased from -538 mm in the first year to -1215 in the second one. The mean ELA (Equilibrium Line Altitude) rose from 2986 m a.s.l. to 3107 m a.s.l.
