Abstract

On the Clariden Glacier in the Glamese Alps (Switzerland), glaciological-climatological measurements have been taken by various researchers since 1914. Mass balances were determined every Autumn and, since 1957, also regularly in Spring at two plateau locations at an altitude of 2 700 m and 2 900 m a.s.1. The measurement program includes, among other things, stake readings and snowpit measurements from digging down to the layer of ochre strewn the previous Autumn. All measurements and the detailed evaluation of the data from 1914 to 1984, is published elsewhere (MÜLLER & KAPPENBERGER, 1991). This paper shows the evolution of the balance up to this Summer. The problem of precipitation measurements on high mountains is demonstrated by the example of a precipitation sampler, a yearly precipitation gauge positioned near the glacier.
